Centered In Christ

About Us

A year and a half after the small town of Manhattan was established in the Kansas Territory, a group of five men and five women met at the schoolhouse on Sunday morning, August 14, 1858, to organize a Baptist church.  Because one of the leaders was ill, it was decided to meet at his house in the afternoon. The ten agreed to a declaration of faith and a church covenant.  These actions organized a church to be known as the First Baptist Church of Manhattan.

One hundred fifty one years later, the church that came to be First is still serving the growing community of Manhattan.  Today the church has intentionally taken on the desire to be a missional church.  As a missional church, the members seek to discover where God is actively at work and come alongside Him in that work in the community and around the world.  There is a new focus today on taking our church outside the walls to those who are hurting, hungry, homeless, and those who need to hear the message of hope that First Baptist Church brings to the community. We are striving to embrace the Great Commission to reach out and teach as Jesus directed us to.

If you are looking for a place to worship with all your heart and to come alongside like-minded people in serving the Lord, won't you please check out First this Sunday?
